Morning Devotion: Read Jeremiah

Jeremiah 5:30  A wonderful and horrible thing is committed in the land; 31  The prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests bear rule by their means; and my people love to have it so: and what will ye do in the end thereof?

Jeremiah was the prophet who was considered the weeping prophet because of his tenderness toward God the desire to see Judah return to God. He could see their backsliding and it broke his heart.

Jeremiah was sent to Judah to warn them of the impending doom from the north, the nation of the Babylonians. They would not listen thinking God would not punish them for their sin. We see that today; people believe that God does not see and if He does, He does not care. They also believe that God in His “love” will overlook their sin and backsliding. That is definitely not the truth.

Jeremiah 5:12  They have belied the LORD, and said, It is not he; neither shall evil come upon us; neither shall we see sword nor famine:

In our text we find the phrase “a wonderful and horrible thing is committed.” An astonishing and filthy thing has happened to Judah. They embraced false preachers who love to bear rule by their means. They love to preach falsely and run their churches by their own means, their own thoughts and plans rather than God’s way.

The sad thing is that the people “love to have it so.” People have embraced the falsehood of apostasy so much that they love it. The love the hyper church with its big flamboyant shows and emotional draft because it appeals the the emotion.

Pastors have it the way because they must draw people into their churches to maintain their income. The love of money is the root of all evil.

Jeremiah 5:30  A wonderful and horrible thing is committed in the land; 31  The prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests bear rule by their means; and my people love to have it so: and what will ye do in the end thereof?

God said their way was wonderful because it was amazing how people could go that far.  It was also horrible in that it did not give the people what they needed but what they wanted. That lead to their destruction and captivity by the Babylonians.

Yes God used the Babylonians as His instrument of punishment.

Jeremiah 1:14  Then the LORD said unto me, Out of the north an evil shall break forth upon all the inhabitants of the land.

Often times God uses other people and things and circumstances to bring us to Him. Never believe that God doesn’t care nor does He see. He is well aware of what is going on and is in complete control.

Don’t let things of the modern world and worship distract you from God and the truth. Always compare what is being presented to you through the lens of God’s word.

If you are not firmly settled on the truth, what will you do in the end thereof?

The choice is still yours,

Pastor Cook
