Morning Devotion: Read Nahum

Nahum 1:2  God is jealous, and the LORD revengeth; the LORD revengeth, and is furious; the LORD will take vengeance on his adversaries, and he reserveth wrath for his enemies. 3  The LORD is slow to anger, and great in power, and will not at all acquit the wicked: the LORD hath his way in the whirlwind and in the storm, and the clouds are the dust of his feet. 4  He rebuketh the sea, and maketh it dry, and drieth up all the rivers: Bashan languisheth, and Carmel, and the flower of Lebanon languisheth. 5  The mountains quake at him, and the hills melt, and the earth is burned at his presence, yea, the world, and all that dwell therein. 6  Who can stand before his indignation? and who can abide in the fierceness of his anger? his fury is poured out like fire, and the rocks are thrown down by him. 7  The LORD is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that trust in him.

This section of scripture speaks of the burden of Nineveh. Nineveh was a vial place in which the people were given over to violence, death and idol worship. They had piles of human sculls laid out in the front of the city gates displaying their conquests. They were simply wicked.

We read in the book of Jonah how God sought for Nineveh to repent when He sent Jonah to warn them. They did repent. But, as with many nations, cities, and individuals, repentance only lasted a short while. They eventually returned to their ways. Many would be like Judas who repented unto himself and not to God.

In the book of Nineveh God prophetically tells of their destruction.

Nahum 1:2  God is jealous, and the LORD revengeth; the LORD revengeth, and is furious; the LORD will take vengeance on his adversaries, and he reserveth wrath for his enemies. 3  The LORD is slow to anger, and great in power, and will not at all acquit the wicked:

Nahum 1:6  Who can stand before his indignation? and who can abide in the fierceness of his anger? his fury is poured out like fire, and the rocks are thrown down by him.

No matter how tough or strong or vial a nation is or thinks they are, they cannot and will never be stronger than God. Nineveh was destroyed.

While the world today does not see or know of God, God is still going to act and His will, will be done.

The great thing about this passage is that the Lord knows those who are His.

Nahum 1:7  The LORD is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that trust in him.

He is a stronghold to those who know Him. To know Him is to know Jesus. Are you on the right side of the will of God?

Are you strong in the Lord and in the power of His might and having done all to stand will you continue to stand?

In our day and age, we find much turmoil, and the waves of our society are tempestuous at best. All these are signs of the times of the Lord’s return and the exacting His will.

Are you ready?

The choice is still yours,

Pastor Cook
